Design and Technology

At Queen's Park Primary School, Design and Technology provides children with opportunities to be creative, innovative and resourceful. Through designing, making and evaluating purposeful products, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to solve real and relevant problems, considering the needs, wants and values of themselves and others. Drawing upon disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art, children learn to take risks, think critically and become resilient problem-solvers. Through evaluating existing and historical designs, they develop an understanding of the impact that design and technology has on daily life and the wider world, preparing them to become innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

Our Design and Technology curriculum reflects the values that underpin learning at Queen's Park Primary School:

A Sense of Belonging

Children work collaboratively, share ideas and learn to value different perspectives. They design with purpose, considering the diverse needs of individuals and communities and understanding how thoughtful design can improve people's lives.

Pathways to Success

Through the design process, children learn to plan, create, evaluate and improve. They develop practical skills, resilience and independence, preparing them for future learning and opportunities beyond primary school.

Spoken Language and Communication (Oracy)

Pupils are encouraged to articulate their ideas, justify design decisions and evaluate products using precise technical vocabulary. Collaborative discussions and presentations help them become confident communicators and critical thinkers.

The Power of Literature

High-quality texts provide meaningful contexts for learning, inspiring creativity and helping children understand how design can respond to real-world challenges and human needs.

Irresistibility

Design and Technology learning is engaging, purposeful and hands-on. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore their own lines of enquiry, embrace challenges and view mistakes as valuable opportunities for growth and improvement.

Children at Queen’s Park learn to select and use tools, equipment and materials safely and effectively. They research, design, make and evaluate products while considering sustainability, inclusivity and innovation. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about how products can be adapted to meet the needs of different users, including those with disabilities, fostering empathy and responsible design practices.
We believe that high-quality Design and Technology education makes an essential contribution to children's creativity, culture, well-being and future success. By the time they leave Queen's Park Primary School, pupils will have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to become reflective learners and responsible innovators who are ready to make a positive contribution to the world around them.
